Certifications & Compliance

What we're audit-ready for.

The certifications we hold, the standards we operate against, and the certifications we deliberately don't pursue.

Insurance & bonding.

  • Commercial general liability: $2 million per occurrence, $4 million aggregate.
  • Cargo liability: $250,000 per load.
  • Workers' compensation: Wisconsin-standard, covering all floor employees.
  • Property insurance: covering the building and inventory.
  • Certificate of insurance: available on request for customer compliance files.

Transportation compliance.

  • DOT number: active, in good standing.
  • FMCSA registration: current.
  • Drug & alcohol testing: per FMCSA requirements.
  • Driver qualification files: maintained per 49 CFR 391.
  • Hours-of-service: electronic logging device on every truck.
  • DOT physicals: all drivers current.
  • Trailer inspections: annual federal; monthly internal.

Building & safety.

  • OSHA compliance: general industry standards.
  • Forklift certification: all operators trained per 29 CFR 1910.178.
  • Fire inspection: annual Oak Creek city inspection, current.
  • Sprinkler system: wet system, inspected quarterly.
  • Emergency egress: all paths marked and tested annually.

Environmental compliance.

  • Wisconsin DNR registration: as a non-hazardous solid waste handler.
  • Mill partnership: contracted disposal path for off-grade corrugate.
  • Spill prevention: SPCC plan in place for IBC wash station operations.
  • Stormwater management: per Wisconsin DNR construction-site standards.
  • Zero-landfill commitment: verified through mill-partner manifests since 2021.

Sustainability reporting.

  • EPA WARM model: applied to all reported CO₂ avoidance claims.
  • EPA Energy Star benchmarking: for the office building.
  • Annual sustainability rollup: published since 2023, available here.
  • Customer-side audit support: available for closed-loop accounts on request.

Food-grade workflow.

We operate a food-grade workflow that's FDA-aligned but not GMP-certified.

  • Segregated inventory storage: food-grade physically separated from industrial.
  • Documented chain-of-custody: per food-grade unit shipped.
  • Food-contact-approved chemistry: in IBC wash detergent and sanitizer.
  • Certificate of cleaning: issued per Level 3 IBC reconditioning.
  • Allergen segregation: available on request.

Note that we are not GMP-certified, SQF-certified, or BRCGS-certified. Customers who require those certifications should source from specialty vendors. For customers whose internal procurement compliance accepts FDA-aligned non-certified workflow, we're a fit.

Certifications we don't hold.

Being explicit. We've looked at several certifications and decided not to pursue them. Here's why.

  • B Corp: the certification adds operational overhead that doesn't correspond to value our customers need. We focus our sustainability work on measurement and reporting customers can use directly.
  • SBTi targets: our operational footprint is below the threshold where SBTi commitments would be meaningful.
  • CDP disclosure: for the same reason. We'll share data with anyone who asks; we don't need the disclosure framework to do so.
  • ISO 14001: the environmental management system framework is good but the certification process is expensive and adds little to our existing zero-landfill workflow.
  • GMP / SQF / BRCGS: primary food packaging certifications. We're a secondary-packaging vendor; these certifications would require operational changes that don't fit our model.
  • RCRA hazmat permit: we explicitly don't handle hazmat. Holding the permit would imply capability we don't have.

Licensing for adjacent services.

We coordinate with partner vendors for services adjacent to ours that require specialized licensing.

  • Hazmat residue handling: two RCRA-permitted partners.
  • Medical waste handling: regional specialty partner.
  • International shipping: freight-forwarder relationships.
  • Battery / electronics recycling: regional specialty partner.

Audit support.

We routinely host customer-side and third-party audits. The typical audit visit:

  1. 2-hour yard walk-through, including the inspection station, IBC wash, and recycling bale yard.
  2. Document review: our regrading rubric, calibration records, chain-of-custody PDFs, mill-partner manifests.
  3. Spreadsheet exchange: our sustainability data file, broken out by source.
  4. Q&A with Pete, Sarah, or Marisol depending on the audit focus.

Audits can be scheduled by emailing hello@ibctanksmilwaukee.comwith "audit" in the subject line.
