Used IBC totes are sold under several labels. The words aren't standardized, so treat them as a starting point and confirm the details with the partner supplier.

As-is or unwashed

The tote as it came out of service. Usually the lowest price and only suitable when you know exactly what it held and that it is compatible with your use.

Washed or rinsed

Cleaned to remove residue. Ask how it was cleaned and what it held before.

Reconditioned

Usually cleaned and inspected, with worn parts such as valves or gaskets replaced. Ask which parts were replaced and whether it was leak tested.

Rebottled

A new inner bottle fitted into a used cage. This is often the choice when prior contents are a concern.

Questions to ask every time

  • What did the tote hold before?
  • How was it cleaned, and is there documentation?
  • Has the valve or bottle been replaced?
  • Is it 275 or 330 gallons, and what valve size and type?
  • Is it suitable for my product? For food, chemicals or regulated materials, check current regulations.
